St. Matthias' major service mission, the Caritas-Minocqua program, distributes funds to those in urgent and immediate need of assistance. Caritas is the Latin word meaning charity, the Christian concept of spiritual and brotherly love, and love for all people.

The Caritas program operates out of Edgar's Place every Thursday from 9:00-Noon. Edgar's Place is the little house next to the Arbor Vitae Street entrance of the church.

The many ways of assisting clients is continually evolving. Some of the assistance offered includes: prescription medication (must show prescription), duplicate Driver's License, work boots/clothing required by employer, clothing and household items, furniture, and auto repair. Under certain circumstances, Caritas may assist with utility bills or gasoline purchase. These particular needs are evaluated on a case-by-case basis and always a client must be present for an interview.

If the Caritas program is unable to assist, referrals are given to other organizations that may be able to help. Caritas does not help with rent or mortgage payments. In these cases, the client will be referred to other agencies that may be of assistance.

Clients agree that Caritas provides more than money and referrals. We listen, and we offer compassion, problem solving, and more importantly, we offer hope to those who are in desperate need.

Donations are tax-deductible. Please make check payable to:
Caritas-Minocqua, P.O. Box 936, Minocqua, WI 54548
