St. Matthias' Episcopal Church

Welcome to St. Matthias Episcopal Church Minocqua
We are glad you are here. Before you check out our other pages, we invite you to read the following reflection from Mother Deborah for the season of Epiphany:

In a recent episode of the Apple TV series Loot, the main character, Molly, went up against a selfish, dastardly villain: her ex-husband’s latest fiancé Luciana, who attempted to shut down Molly’s philanthropic foundation because it exposes the harm billionaires cause. When Molly confronted Luciana on their wedding day threatening to expose her for lying about her identity, she found Luciana standing in front of several windows, surrounded by light, crying. John, Molly’s billionaire ex-husband, had left Luciana without saying goodbye. Instead of moving forward with her plan to expose Luciana, Molly was empathetic. The two women talked and realized John had used them to fight each other so they wouldn’t notice what he was doing. In the light of this revelation, they decided they needed to be for each other, not against each other.

It was a little bit of Epiphany light in a secular TV show. It happens. Sometimes. That’s what keeps me watching. Those little bits of hope that shine through all the other stuff.

The church year has moved into the season of Epiphany; a season that begins with the arrival of the magi and features Biblical accounts revealing who Jesus is, how Jesus is more than another wisdom teacher, healer, preacher, or storyteller in how he shined the new light he brings into the world. Sometimes light can feel so good, especially when we get a sunny day after many cloudy ones. Other times, light can reveal things we might not want to recognize, notice, or
acknowledge about the world, our community, or even ourselves. But the message and the hope of the season is just like what I watched on the TV show Loot: when we can discuss what is revealed with kindness and compassion, we might discover something lifegiving, like forgiveness. And how hope is born from such situations.

I don’t know how 2026 is starting for you. However it is beginning, my hope and prayer for all of us is to be open to receiving what the Light of Christ has to show us this Epiphany. Together we can work through what the Light reveals and discover the life-giving love of God in new and deeper ways.

Creator’s life shined out from the Word, giving light to all human beings. This is the true Light that comes to all the peoples of the world and shines on everyone. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot overcome it or put it out.
John 1:4-5 First Nations Version

Many Epiphany Blessings,
Mother Deborah
